Reading, photographs and documents

Verduni supports language learning through reading, dictionary lookups and practice. Reading languages include English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese. Camera recognition and opening PDF, eBook and image files take place on your device. Opening a file does not upload the original file. Saved documents, lookup history, bookmarks, profile choices and learning progress are stored locally. Explicit online translation and voice input have the separate data handling described below.

Reading language

Collection language packs contain prepared article translations for the language pairs covered by the pack. Downloaded packs are stored in the app’s private storage. Reading saved article translations does not generate a new online translation. Coverage depends on the installed pack; not every paragraph or language pair is available. Personal documents and photographs are not added to public article packs.

Word lookups

Word taps look up entries in installed dictionaries and language packs. Collection articles display a saved offline paragraph translation when available; a missing translation is reported as unavailable. Word taps in imported files and news show dictionary meanings and other available translations instead of generating an online context translation. The former Improve online context option is no longer part of this flow.

Quick Translate can process entered text using on-device translation models for supported language pairs. Downloading models needs a connection. Where on-device translation is unsupported and the online fallback is used, the requested text (up to 6,000 characters) and target language are sent to our Cloudflare-hosted translation service, which uses Groq to generate the result. Do not treat Quick Translate as an offline-only feature for every language pair.

Voice input and reading aloud

The microphone button opens the speech-recognition service installed on your Android device. That provider may process audio online under its own settings and privacy policy. Recognised text returns to Verduni and is submitted to Quick Translate, using the translation behavior described above. Reading words aloud uses the selected Android text-to-speech engine; network use depends on the engine and voice installed.

News and external pages

Fetching news connects to our Cloudflare-hosted service. Cloudflare necessarily receives connection information such as your IP address, request time and requested URL to deliver and secure the service. Our news database stores news content and processing records, not a reader profile. City filtering in the standard news feed is performed on the device. Opening an original article or another external link connects you to its provider, which may process connection information and use cookies under its own policy.

German news learning material may be generated server-side using Groq from approved source material. Your documents and vocabulary history are not included in those generation requests.

Google services and purchases

Google Play handles payments and purchase records. Verduni receives product and purchase-status information to unlock or restore access; it does not receive your full payment-card or bank-account details. Purchases are associated with your Google Play account. Free allowances and article unlock records are stored locally, not in a Verduni cloud account. Verduni has no app login accounts. You can manage or cancel a subscription in Google Play. Google ML Kit recognises text on-device. Its SDK may send technical usage and performance metrics to Google; on-device image and text processing does not mean the SDK has no network-related data processing.

Provider information: Google privacy policy, ML Kit terms and privacy, Cloudflare privacy policy, Groq privacy policy. Providers may process information outside the European Economic Area. Applicable transfer safeguards and provider retention arrangements must be considered alongside these notices.

Purposes and legal grounds

Where personal information is processed to provide requested features, purchases or support, the basis is performance of the contract or steps you request before a contract (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). Necessary security and abuse prevention rely on legitimate interests in maintaining a secure service (Article 6(1)(f)). Legally required records rely on Article 6(1)(c). Where consent is required, it must be obtained separately and can be withdrawn without affecting earlier lawful processing. Camera permission can be revoked in Android settings.

Retention and deletion

Local saved data remains until you remove it or clear app storage. Remove saved files in Bookmarks and clear lookup history in History. Clearing Verduni storage in Android settings removes local progress, settings and unlock records as well; backup copies are managed separately through Android/Google settings. Cached news is replaced when refreshed. News-processing error and API-call records are cleared after 30 days by the scheduled service; these records concern content generation, not reader activity. Provider-managed logs and payment records have separate retention rules. Support messages are kept while needed to resolve your request, meet record-keeping duties or handle related legal claims, then deleted when no longer necessary.

Your rights and contact

Subject to applicable conditions, you may request access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability, or object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact us using the details above. We generally respond within one month; permitted extensions will be explained. You may complain to a data protection supervisory authority, including in the EU country where you live or work. Verduni does not use your reading progress to make automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.

Updates
